How do you reduce subscription cancellations on Shopify without hiding the cancel button?

What happens when a subscriber cancels?

They pick a reason from a short list you write, such as “Too expensive”, “I have too much” or “The timing doesn’t work”. Each reason can lead to one retention offer that answers it:

  • a one-time discount on the next order for “too expensive”,
  • a skipped order for “I have too much”,
  • a new date for the next order when the timing is off,
  • a new delivery address, or another pickup location, after a move.

Matching the offer to the reason is the point. A subscriber who has too much coffee doesn’t need a discount. They need to skip an order. Someone moving abroad needs no offer at all, so you can leave a reason without one. You can also ask for a few words of explanation, which helps most on “Other”. As you learn which offers work, you change the reasons and offers in the Zubs settings.

Can subscribers pause instead of cancelling?

Yes, if you offer pausing. Subscribers choose from the pause lengths you allow, or a resume date, and the subscription starts again by itself. Nothing is billed while it rests. For seasonal products, holidays or a full pantry, a pause keeps the subscriber who would otherwise have cancelled and forgotten about you.

Can subscribers always cancel?

Yes. Zubs keeps cancelling available in the customer portal, and you can’t switch it off. Retention offers appear along the way, but they never block the exit. That keeps the flow fair to subscribers and saves your support team the “please cancel me” emails. An open exit also makes your offers more credible. Subscribers who don’t feel trapped give a skip or a pause a fair look instead of hunting for the way out.

If a plan has a minimum number of orders, a cancellation before that minimum is scheduled and takes effect after the last required order. The portal tells the subscriber how many orders are left.

How does it fit with the rest of Zubs?

The cancellation flow runs inside the customer portal, where subscribers can already skip, reschedule or change items before they think about leaving. Every reason flows into subscription analytics, so you see which reasons grow and how soon people cancel. Sequential Flows work the other way round: they reward the subscribers who stay. The cancellation offers playbook suggests an offer for each common reason.

Set it up in the help center: cancellation reasons, retention offers and pausing.

Who is it for?

Every subscription business, and especially consumables. With coffee, supplements or pet food, “I still have some” and “not right now” are common reasons to leave, and a skip or a pause keeps the customer.

Bottom line

Zubs turns a cancellation into one last, fitting offer, a pause or a clean exit, and you never hide the cancel button. Each reason tells you what to fix next.

Frequently asked questions

Can subscribers always cancel?
Yes. Cancelling is always available in the customer portal. On a plan with a minimum number of orders, it takes effect once that minimum is met.
How many retention offers does a subscriber see?
At most one, chosen by you for the reason they picked. Some reasons are better left without an offer.
Does a retention discount stay on the subscription?
No. It applies to the next order only.
Do paused subscriptions resume by themselves?
Yes. They resume on the date or after the length the subscriber chose, and nothing is billed in between.
Will I learn why subscribers leave?
Yes. The reason a subscriber picks is recorded with the cancellation, and subscribers can add their own words, so you see what to fix in your analytics.
